Endless cyclopean hallways and classrooms. Shining linoleum. Bleach. Bells ringing. Pencil cases. Backpacks.
That hell couldn't have been made by human hands. That layer was ripped straight from some vile, deep stratum of the Id - the collective unconscious.
And the humiliation. Constant humiliation, all eleven years. Total, all-encompassing shame that physically destroyed me. And I was powerless to do anything about it. This is normal, right? This is how it's supposed to be. Just be quiet. Don't stand out. Try not to be noticed. Keep your mouth shut.
And honestly? This is everywhere in Russia.
This isn't life. This is psychopathy. Millions and millions of Russians for centuries have just accepted this rotten, pathetic existence - barely different from what I described above - because any alternative inside this prison of nations is simply impossible.
Because the sacred duty of the Great Leader is to impose his will on every single one of his subjects, down to the last peasant. The sacred duty of the Great Leader is to exploit his Empire with the most uncompromising ruthlessness - as if the entire earth were his personal backyard. And the sacred duty of the Great Leader is to defend the highest Slavic principle: Power.
Dominate or be dominated. Enslave or be enslaved. Kill or be killed.

And no matter how hard we try to hide our medieval savagery - shaving our beards, building a navy, luring German nobility, resisting European invasions, abolishing serfdom, switching from tsarism to communism to some schizophrenic mix of both - Russia remains true to itself.
Three centuries after Peter the "Westernizer" the Great, this is still a country that can't build decent roads or even provide gas to its own people.
What good is a superpower if it can't provide a decent standard of living for the majority of its population?
What good is a massive nuclear arsenal if the country's civilian infrastructure is constantly teetering on the edge of irreversible collapse?
What good are endless conquests and expansion if the country can't even get its own house in order?
That we have repeatedly refused to ask ourselves these difficult but necessary questions throughout our history - that is our most terrible failure as a nation.
