The radiator behind and above the engine is from when the cooling systems worked on the thermosyphon principal and many vintage cars (both 2 stroke and 4 stroke) have cooling systems that work this way. It relies on the hot water rising to the top to circulate the water. Later designs incorporated a water pump, but left the radiator in the position needed for thermosyphoning to work.
Some 2 stroke engines have 2 or 3 sets of ignition contact breaker points on the front of the engine, so with those engines it made sense to leave the radiator behind the engine after the cooling systems were improved by the addition of water pumps as it allowed easy access to the contact breakers.
